A good patio changes how you use your whole yard. The problem is that most backyards around Forest and Lynchburg sit on red Piedmont clay that heaves, holds water, and pushes a poorly built patio out of level within a couple of winters. Hardscaping done right starts under the surface, with a base built for our soil, so the patio, walkway, or wall still sits true ten years from now.
Heckman Landworks designs and builds hardscaping across Forest, Lynchburg, Timberlake, Bedford, and the Smith Mountain Lake area. Paver patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits, and full outdoor living spaces. We handle the design and the build, so one crew owns the result from the first sketch to the last swept joint.

What We Design and Build
Hardscaping covers every hard surface and structure in your landscape. We build the whole range and tie it together so it looks like one intentional space, not a set of add-ons.
- Paver walkways and paths. Clean routes from driveway to door, or through the garden, that hold up to Virginia freeze-thaw.
- Paver and stone patios. The centerpiece. Sized and shaped around how you actually entertain and relax.
- Retaining walls. Structural walls that tame a sloped lot, stop erosion, and carve out usable, flat living space.
- Fire pits. The reason the backyard gets used from September through November around here.
- Outdoor kitchens and outdoor living spaces. Built-in grills, seating walls, and covered areas that turn a patio into a second living room.

What Hardscaping Costs in the Lynchburg Area
Pricing depends on material, size, site access, and how much grading or wall work the ground needs before a single paver goes down. As a general guide for our region, a professionally installed paver patio commonly runs about $12 to $40 per square foot, materials and labor included. A mid-size 400 square foot patio often lands somewhere between $5,000 and $14,000 depending on the paver line and site prep.
What actually moves your number:
- Material. Standard concrete pavers sit at the low end. Premium tumbled, porcelain, and natural stone cost more but read as higher-end.
- Base and site prep. Our clay soil demands a proper compacted base. Skipping it is why cheap patios fail, and it is a real part of the cost.
- Grade and walls. A sloped lot near SML or Boonsboro may need a retaining wall or grading before the patio, which adds structure and price.
- Design complexity. Curves, borders, inlays, steps, and built-in seating all add labor.
- Access. A tight gate or a long carry from the street changes how we stage material.

Pavers vs Poured Concrete
It is the question almost every homeowner asks first. Poured concrete is cheaper on day one. Pavers cost more up front and win on the long run, especially on ground that moves like ours.
| Factor | Paver Patio | Poured Concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Higher | Lower |
| Lifespan | 30 to 50 years | 20 to 25 years |
| Cracking on clay | Flexes with the ground, individual pavers reset | Cracks as a slab, hard to repair invisibly |
| Repairs | Lift and replace single pavers | Patch or replace whole sections |
| Design options | Wide range of color, shape, and pattern | Limited without stamping or staining |
On Central Virginia clay, that flex is the whole argument. When the ground shifts through a freeze-thaw winter, a paver surface moves with it and any settling paver can be reset. A concrete slab cracks and stays cracked.
Built for Virginia Clay and Slopes
This is where a local crew earns its keep. Red Piedmont clay expands when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and it drains slowly. A patio built on a lazy base will pump, heave, and go out of level within a season or two. We build to the ground we actually have out here: excavate to proper depth, install and compact the right base in lifts, set the pavers, then lock the joints with polymeric sand so weeds and washout stay out.
Slope is the other Central Virginia reality. Plenty of lots around Forest and the lake sit on a grade. Instead of fighting it, we use retaining walls and terracing to turn an unusable hillside into flat, functional space, with drainage planned in from the start so water moves away from the house instead of pooling against the patio.
Our Design and Build Process

Hardscaping FAQs
How much does a paver patio cost?
In the Lynchburg area, a professionally installed paver patio commonly runs about $12 to $40 per square foot including materials and labor. A mid-size 400 square foot patio often falls between $5,000 and $14,000 depending on the paver you choose, how much base and grading the site needs, and the design detail. The most accurate way to price yours is a quick look at the space.
Are pavers cheaper than poured concrete?
Poured concrete is usually cheaper up front. Pavers cost more to install but tend to be the better long-term value, because they last longer, resist cracking on our shifting clay soil, and any settled paver can be lifted and reset instead of patching a whole slab.
What lasts longer, pavers or concrete?
A well-built paver patio commonly lasts 30 to 50 years, while a poured concrete patio typically lasts around 20 to 25 years before it needs major repair. On Central Virginia clay that moves with freeze-thaw, the gap is even wider, because pavers flex with the ground instead of cracking as one slab.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
It depends on height. In Virginia, retaining walls over about four feet, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top, generally require engineering and a permit, and walls holding a surcharge like a driveway can trigger it sooner. We handle the structural design and any permitting a wall needs as part of the project.
How long does a hardscape project take?
A straightforward patio or walkway is often a few days on site once we start. Larger projects with retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, or heavy grading run longer. We give you a realistic timeline with your estimate, and weather permitting we stick to it.
